Roujin Z

dvdcover.jpg

Written and designed by Otomo Katsuhiro (creator of Akira), Roujin Z is both a social commentary and a spoof of our society's treatment of the elderly. Other staff that worked on this film also worked on various other favorites, including the Patlabor movies and The Wings of Honneamise.

Story Intro

Takazawa, an elderly invalid cared for by the young student nurse, Haruko, is taken by a shady medical group to become a test subject for their latest invention, a robotic bed that can feed, bathe, exercise, entertain, and monitor patients with "ultimate efficiency." Haruko believes that love is still needed to truly "care" for the patient, but the senior hospital staff want nothing to do with that, after they see what the bottom line can be if this experiment works.

Unfortunately, the bed is far too efficient at meeting every need of Takazawa, especially when he remembers his late wife and wants to visit the beach they used to frequent; the bed complies by escaping the hospital, with some help from Haruko and her friends.

And some help from the bed's computer, which just happens to be an untested military prototype. . . .

Other Notes

The "live" calligraphy used for the title is done by Mr. Otomo himself.
